What Goes on Sale and What to Buy on Clearance in May

Hello Spring! Hello warmer weather, fresh berries, and sales! Fresh produce is barely being planted in my area. The only way to feed my family fresh food or less is to shop according to the national growing season. Chances are very good that those are going to be the sale items in the grocery store anyway. Better tasting seasonal produce and on sale? Yes, please!

Shopping seasonally also saves money on household and big ticket items too.  If you have a current or future need, now is the time to shop the May holiday sales for the following fresh fruit and vegetables, food, and household goods.

For extra savings, pair the sale with a coupon from my printable online coupon database (affiliate link) because money saving coupons often follow national sales cycles too!

16 Fun Ways to Ditch the Disposables and Save Money

Not everyone is a crafter or DIYer or has the time to make or upcycle a money saving reusable option and that's OK.

I don't always have the time or talent either.

I took me three years to get a homemade case for my sunglasses because I finally gave up on the idea of making one and bought one from a crafty friend because I kept putting the project off for one reason or another.

While I was dream shopping on Etsy I  learned how to create a collection of stuff I like. Everything in my Treasury took a turn toward green living - no big surprise there.  I tweaked it to include products you may want to try but don't have the time or desire to make.

Welcome to my collection of 16 earth friendly, recycled, or reusable products that can help you ditch the disposables, make your corner of the world a little nicer place, while saving a bit of green too.

The Food Stamp Challenge: Publicity Stunt or Conversation Starter?

Mario Batali is no fool.

Mario Batali  is on the board of the New York City Food Bank. He created his Food Stamp Challenge in 2012 to raise awareness about potential cuts in the food stamp system (called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP for short.)

Batali challenged his family and some of his celebrity and politician friends to feed their family for a week on $29.00 ($1.38 per meal.) The average food stamp allotment. (While doing research this post, I found that the dollar amount can be different depending upon the person’s state, income, family size and other factors.)

Of course he talks about the Food Stamp Challenge and lessons learned when he does the challenge each year on his talk show The Chew.  I’m guessing it doesn't raise as much awareness as he’d like since people don’t watch much daytime television because they are working.

This year Batali upped the SNAP awareness challenge by a gazillion. Batali challenged controversial Gwyneth Paltrow to eat on a food stamp budget.

And the Internet went insane.

How to Make Orangina at Home!

After a 7 mile run, Husband likes to quench his deep down body thirst with an Orangina.

This can get pricey at the quantities Husband’s been sucking down on a weekly basis so he came up with a recipe for a not-so-pricey homemade Orangina knockoff recipe.

Pin this drink recipe for later!

Later, I made our homemade Orangina even cheaper by buying Husband a Soda Stream Soda Maker (get more information about it here) so he can carbonate and his own soda water.

Project Me: Find the Motivation to Exercise

I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions on or around New Years Eve because I end up breaking those hastily made resolutions.

I’m better at keeping my New Years Resolutions if I make them when I need them. Usually several months before or after January first. Sometimes I make them in the middle or near the end of the year.

My 2015 New Years Resolution is keep rebuilding my muscles after leg injury last year with exercise, not excuses so I can fulfill my childhood dream of taking ballet classes.

Unexpected bonus? The incentive to give myself pedicures more often because I take classes in bare feet.
