Book Review: The Full Plate Diet

I hate diet books. They seem to work to reduce water weight at first. However, once you deviate from the menu plans because if you want to have spaghetti with spinach and red sauce for dinner instead the gruel the diet book calls for, the plan goes all pear shaped.

I met with Dr. Stuart Seale one of the authors of the Full Plate Diet at BlogHer last summer. We were chit chatting about healthy eating. He told me that many people don’t have a diet that includes lots of vegetables and fiber, unlike Husband and I. Yet again, I have a moment when I realize that I’m not like all of the other kids in school. Oops.

I accepted his gift of The Full Plate Diet thinking that it was a book about eating healthy to be healthy than a diet book. Actually it’s a little of both. The idea behind the food plan is that you concentrate on incorporating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans & peas, and nuts & seeds = more fiber into your daily meals, you’ll lose weight.

Don’t freak out. It’s not that bad – really.

Actually, this is the type of diet that is recommended for diabetics and those folks who tend to have a few, um, clogs in the last part of their digestive system ifyouknowwhatImean. You don’t have to give up eating meat or forced to eat a vegetable that you don’t like or that is cost prohibitive. The book lists high fiber vegetables, grains, etc. but keeps cost and availability in mind. One of the high fiber food suggested is carrots (which is also rich in other nutrients.) Simple, available, affordable, and versatile carrots.

I was disappointed that there weren’t many recipes in the book. Instead, there are suggestions for “powering up” the fiber in typical meals you might already make. For example, they suggest adding black beans and extra vegetables to spaghetti sauce and serving it over whole wheat spaghetti. Pretty darn easy and a good way to get kids to eat vegetables when they claim to hate vegetables and is very doable. Best of all, you are not totally giving up your favorite foods, just changing them a little. I like that.

Overall, I’d recommend The Full Plate diet not as a diet book (although I admit once I switched to this way of eating, I lost some weight in a good way) but as a healthy eating/lifestyle plan. It’s also a great way to save money on your food budget. My food bills went down considerably once I cut out the processed foods and focused on fiber.
